Post-visit care
Now that you've been checked and/or treated for lice, let's talk about next steps! Here is your quick guide to effective post-visit care.
The Do's
Wash out the oil: Use adult shampoo (add a drop of dish soap if needed) and lather 2-3 times. Leaving a little trace is safe and makes hair soft.
Heat-treat fabrics: Wash bed sheets, pillowcases, worn clothes, and towels in hot water. Use the dryer for 30-45 mins for hats and stuffed animals.
Contain the hair: Use braids, buns, or space buns. Keeping hair up prevents lice from using loose strands as ladders between heads.
Schedule follow-up: A visit in 3-7 days ensures every microscopic nit is gone. Don't worry if there's a little psychosomatic itching!
The Don'ts
Don't panic: You do not need to deep-clean the whole house. Focused washing and the dryer trick for non-washables is all you need.
Avoid loose hair: Letting longer hair hang loose makes it easy for lice to climb from one child to another. Keep it styled and safe.
Sharing isn't caring: Treat hairbrushes like toothbrushes! Avoid sharing hair accessories, hats, or sports helmets with foam padding.
No early helmet use: Give sports helmets a rest for 5 days. Sealing them in a bag prevents accidental use during this time.
